The Healing Spaces training delivered by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) includes practical tools to better support refugees and asylum seekers through trauma-informed practice. It highlighted the importance of creating environments where people feel safe, valued and connected to their community.
Recently, our team attended the Healing Spaces training delivered by the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The training focuses on trauma-informed approaches for organisations working with refugees, asylum seekers and displaced communities. It offers simple but powerful tools to help create safer, more welcoming and supportive spaces for people who may have experienced trauma, displacement and isolation.
Some of the highlights include:
· Understanding how trauma and toxic stress canaffect learning, behaviour and wellbeing
· Building safe and predictable environments
· Practical ideas for community-building, emotional wellbeing and inclusive engagement
· Strategies that can easily be adapted for volunteer-led and community organisations
What stood out most was how accessible and grounded the training is. It recognises the realities many organisations are working within while still offering practical, compassionate approaches that can make a real difference.
