Brushstrokes encountered a compelling case involving a young Afghan woman who had initially arrived in the UK on a student visa, driven by dreams of educational opportunities and a brighter future. However, her life took an unexpected and distressing turn when she became entangled with a deceitful man. This individual, already married with six children, entered into a non-legal marriage with her, subjecting her to coercion and exploitation. As her visa expired, she was pressured to seek asylum and compelled to live with the man’s first wife and six children, essentially serving as a maid in their household.
Resilient and determined to escape this oppressive situation, the client took a brave step by leaving her husband and reaching out to Brushstrokes for assistance.
Upon her arrival at Brushstrokes, the client was in a vulnerable state, unaware of her rights and entitlements. The Early Action team immediately rallied to provide her with comprehensive support, elucidating her rights and available assistance. Recognizing the urgency of her situation, Brushstrokes swiftly registered her with a General Practitioner (GP) and facilitated the completion of her HC1 form, granting her access to free NHS treatment. Additionally, s.95 asylum support was secured to meet her immediate needs, ensuring stability and relief during this challenging time.
Understanding the necessity for holistic support, Brushstrokes referred the client to Black Country Women’s Aid, where she received additional assistance. This encompassed emotional support, counselling, and tailored resources aimed at addressing the trauma she had endured. The client also became an active participant in Brushstrokes’ women’s group, a supportive environment that further facilitated her healing journey. Here, she engaged in shared experiences and skill-building activities.
The collaborative efforts of Brushstrokes and its partner services led to a remarkable transformation in the client’s life. Empowered by the support she received, she gained confidence, knowledge of her rights, and a valuable support network. Today, she radiates happiness and embodies the strength and resilience that emerge when individuals are provided with the right support and resources.
