Our client, a transgender asylum seeker, initially identified as a woman but was placed in a male asylum hotel. Operating through an Early Action model, our outreach services focus on providing a safe and confidential space to address issues at the earliest opportunity. The client, feeling secure in our environment, disclosed the challenges affecting their mental and physical well- being. Facing assaults and prejudice in the male hotel due to their transgender identity left them feeling vulnerable and threatened.
Meeting the distressed and depressed client, we immediately recognised the gravity of their situation. They openly shared the impact of daily treatment and prejudice on their health. Moreover, their asylum seeker status further complicated access to services, including healthcare and legal representation. We assisted them in understanding their entitlements, registering with a GP, and obtaining an HC2 Certificate to access NHS services. We referred them to Micro Rainbow, a specialist organisation providing support and housing options for gender identity- related challenges.
Our collaboration with Micro Rainbow resulted in securing independent living for the client, an achievement celebrated with heartfelt joy. This triumph was furthered by facilitating access to Legal Aid and a Solicitor. By helping them claim an HC2 certificate, we ensured free dental treatment and holistic care. Addressing immediate concerns, advocating for rights, and connecting with specialised partners, we elevated their well-being and facilitated access to housing, healthcare, and emotional support.
