SDCAS: Enhancing Homelessness Support for Asylum Seekers

Our data has illuminated shifting patterns and issues, arming us with the knowledge needed to devise more effective solutions.

Organisation Profile

Introduction

In our ongoing journey, one key lesson has emerged from our Homelessness advice and advocacy project. Through it, we’ve gained insights into the nuanced challenges of homelessness, particularly as they pertain to asylum seekers. Our data has illuminated shifting patterns and issues, arming us with the knowledge needed to devise more effective solutions. As we adapt and evolve, our training programmes are shaped by these insights, enabling us to provide better support.

Changing Face of Homelessness for Asylum Seekers

An area where we’ve observed significant change is in ‘informal sleeping arrangements’. This avenue has become increasingly difficult, leaving many of the individuals we assist at a heightened risk of homelessness. Conversely, the pandemic-induced accommodation provision has housed numerous asylum seekers in temporary accommodations, often linked to the rising numbers of people in hotels. However, this housing arrangement comes with its own set of complexities, with those on resettlement schemes now facing homelessness risks without the same protection as upon arrival.

Urgent Housing Dilemmas

A concerning trend we’ve identified is the growing number of people granted leave to remain but facing a mere 28 days to secure housing. This tight timeline is compounded by the absence of case workers, intensifying the challenges we face in aiding these individuals. Moreover, our homelessness case work has unveiled additional worries, such as age dispute cases, individuals released from hospitals or prisons without adequate housing support.

Navigating Complexities and Challenges

Amid this landscape, our team grapples mainly with issues related to duty of care within statutory agencies. Collaborations with care coordinators, probation officers, and social workers are essential, yet there is room for improvement in terms of providing comprehensive support. Leveraging our data strategically, we spotlight these concerns, complementing our insights with impactful case studies and direct interactions with councillors and MPs. Our ability to engage in multi-agency forums amplifies our findings, driving a collective push for more effective solutions.

In Conclusion

Insights drawn from our data illuminate the changing face of homelessness, shaping our strategies and enhancing our support offerings. By addressing emergent challenges head-on, advocating for more robust support systems, and leveraging our findings to advocate for change, we are committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of those facing homelessness within the asylum seeker community.
