Strengthening Casework Capabilities: Response to Immigration Challenges, Part 2

Collaboration with the EAR initiative and the sharing of case studies proved highly beneficial. It offered valuable insights into the performance and practices of other projects.

Organisation Profile

What’s Changed Now?

The implementation of these initiatives brought about significant changes within Action Foundation. Staff assurance levels witnessed a notable increase, stemming from structured plans and pathways. Stress associated with casework monitoring was significantly reduced. Staff members were now supported in reflecting on their practices and managing stress through clinical supervisor sessions and team away days. This holistic approach not only boosted staff assurance but also fostered an environment that supported continuous development and effective client management.

How Did the EAR Partnership Enhance This Work?

Collaboration with the EAR initiative and the sharing of case studies proved highly beneficial. It offered valuable insights into the performance and practices of other projects. Learning from diverse approaches within different cities contributed significantly to Action Foundation’s own project development. This collaborative sharing not only enhanced their understanding of effective practices but also strengthened the collective knowledge base within the EAR initiative, nurturing a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Challenges Faced and Mitigation

One of the central challenges faced was competency and capacity building, particularly under the early action advice provision. As the responsibility of managing clients in crisis situations grew, there was an increasing need to prepare staff to handle their own stress and frustration effectively.  This preparation was essential for ensuring a sustainable and resilient team over the last six months. By safeguarding the well-being of the team and enhancing the overall effectiveness of their services, Action Foundation succeeded in addressing this challenge.

Recommendations

Action Foundation Emphasises the often- overlooked aspect of staff well-being when  dealing with high demand and client expectations. Equipping staff members with tools and strategies to navigate their workload and address the challenges presented by clients is paramount. Neglecting self-care can jeopardise mental and physical health, hindering performance and the delivery of quality services. To address this, Action Foundation suggests a focus on developing strategies to protect staff and volunteer casework teams, implementing and enhancing protocols, and improving quality assurance systems.

Conclusion

By prioritizing the integration of social connection with casework in their Drop-In services, focusing on staff protection, investing in professional development, and implementing systematic changes in casework provision, Action Foundation has responded proactively to the challenges posed by recent immigration interventions. Their emphasis on skill enhancement, stress assessment, and internal progression pathways reflects their commitment to ensuring that their team is well-prepared and resilient in providing effective support to clients amidst a dynamic and challenging landscape.
